Flying Ants
The setting sun illuminates a swarm of flying ants that have been stirred out of their nest by a summer storm. Taken east of Corrigin, Western Australia on 23rd January 2016.
The corrugated iron shed in this image is a very common sight on Australian country roads. When it rains, schoolchildren take cover in them as they wait for the school bus to arrive.

Manifold Witness
A majestic Salmon Gum stands alone in a paddock, surrounded by storm clouds. It welcomes the refreshing rain and is witness to the amazing beauty of the land it plants its roots in.
At the end of a long day chasing thunderstorms throughout the wheat-belt region, a group of storm chasers converged near this spot to watch an epic decaying storm right on sunset. I moved further down the road to see if I could frame this rainbow but by the time I found this tree, it was almost gone. I wonder how many rainbows and thunderstorms this tree has seen?

The Old Yards
I have passed by these old yards many times over the years and always thought it would make for a great image if the light and sky were just right. The 4th Dec 2016 was that day. Not long after this photo was taken, this site was demolished to make way for a new light industrial area.

2 Trees
When the land was cleared for the purpose of broadacre farming, tens of millions of trees were cut down, ripped out of the ground, and burnt to ashes. Many were turned into timber used for building, construction, and infrastructure. This had a severe impact on the landscape.
But some survived, like these two sentinels, remnants of a long-forgotten time when trees ruled supreme. With their roots buried deep into the hard ground, they tap into subterranean water. Even during the hottest summers, they are green and fruitful, providing shelter and food for many different species of animals and insects.

The East Boundary Fence
Back in my younger days, I had a few jobs on various stations around Western Australia. This photo reminds me of long days riding the boundary fence lines checking for breaks and holes. There was always a sense of mystery as to what lay beyond the fence, out in the wild and remote regions of Western Australia.
